Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy is the most common form of electrical stimulation.
TENS is used for pain management. A small, battery-operated device that delivers low-voltage electrical current through the skin via electrodes is placed near the source of pain. The electricity from the electrodes stimulates nerves in the affected area and sends signals to the brain that “scramble” normal pain perception.
- TENS is not painful, it is a powerful tool to mask pain and provide for relaxation.
- TENS is very similar to other muscle stimulation or electrical stimulation you may have had in the past, it is a very effective means of pain control.
ALL NEW PATIENTS will be offered their own TENS machine and supplies, you do not have to accept the unit if you do not want it. If your insurance allows for durable medical equipment D.M.E, you may be eligible to receive a lifetime supply of pads, leads, batteries to continue to control your pain. You should never receive a bill or have an out of pocket expense for this service. Ask Dr. Fuhrmann if a TENS unit is right for you, and how it may help your condition.
